                        King’s Great Bedchamber
                        William III bought the crimson   Cardinal Wolsey
                        bed from his Lord Chamberlain.
                                                 Thomas Wolsey (c.1475–1530),
                                                 simultaneously a cardinal,
                                                 Archbishop of York and
                                                 chancellor, was, after the king,
                                                 the most powerful man in
                                                 England. However, when he
                                                 was unable to persuade the
                                                 pope to allow Henry VIII to
                                                 divorce his first wife, Catherine
                                                 of Aragon, Wolsey fell
                                                 from royal favour.
                                                 He died while
