FLYING TRAIN
The cars of the world’s oldest suspended monorail have
been gliding 40 ft (12 m) above the traffic, crowded
streets, and river of Wuppertal, Germany, since 1901. The
8.3 mile- (13.3 km-) long track, slung beneath a towering
iron structure, provides daily transport for local people
and a thrilling tourist ride. The model for this railway was
an experimental electric hanging monorail built in 1897
by German engineer Carl Eugen Langen.
