       / The Stockholm Archipelago

Extending 80 km (50 miles) east from the sheltered waters of Norrtälje
Stockholm to the open sea, the archipelago encompasses Kapellskär
tens of thousands of islands of all shapes and sizes, some
inhabited, others not. Many of the inner archipelago’s larger
islands, such as Värmdö, Ingarö and Ljusterö, are linked to the
mainland by bridges and car ferries, making them in parts
little more than city suburbs. But the majority of the Stockholm Stavsnäs
archipelago islands, with their traditional wooden houses,
cosy hotels and youth hostels, and summer sailing regattas,
can be reached by an extensive network of scheduled ferries
departing from Stockholm, Vaxholm, Stavsnäs and Dalarö. 0 kilometres 40
