I. The verbs sakay, lakad, and maneho
The verbs sakay (ride), lakad (walk) and maneho (drive) are usually used in
sentences with the focus on the subject. They can be conjugated this way:
Completed Incompleted Contemplative
sumakay sumasakay sasakay
naglakad naglalakad maglalakad
nagmaneho nagmamaneho magmamaneho
Here are examples of how these verbs can be used in sentences. The words in
parenthesis are words whose equivalents in Filipino have not yet been taught.
However, they are useful in imagining the time line of the action. Note the use of
the marker ang before the subject and the marker ng before the object.
EXAMPLES Sumakay ang lalaki ng bus.
:
(yesterday) (The man took a bus.) (literally, Rode marker man marker
bus.)
Sumasakay ang babae ng tren.
(every day) (The woman takes the train.) (literally, Rides marker
woman marker train.)
Sasakay siya ng eroplano.
(tomorrow) (He/She will ride a plane.) (literally, Will ride he/she
marker plane.)
Naglakad ang bata papuntang eskuwelahan.
(yesterday) (The child walked going to school.) (literally, Walked
marker child going to school.)
Naglalakad ang mga estudyante papuntang eskuwelahan.
(every day) (The students walk to school.) (literally, Walking marker
students going marker school.)
Maglalakad ako papuntang opisina.
