Developed from the dogs used as caribou herders and guards Originally bred from Finnish Lapphunds (left), German
by the Sami people of Lapland, the Finnish Lapphund is enjoying Shepherd Dogs (see p.42), and working collies, this dog was
growing popularity, both in Finland and elsewhere. Affectionate recognized as a separate breed in the 1960s. The Lapponian

Similar to the Finnish Lapphund (above) in all but color, Developed in Sweden’s northern forest regions, this large,
the Swedish Lapphund was once used as a caribou herder by the upstanding dog, also known as the Jämthund, was once kept for
nomadic Sami people. This breed is popular in Sweden as a house hunting elk, bear, and lynx. Popular with Sweden’s military forces,
