FRENCH COURT LAPDOG
In the past lapdogs were luxuries that only the
wealthy could afford. Small, spaniel-like
dogs, resembling the Papillon, start to appear
alongside their owners in portraits painted
around 1500. Their popularity in Continental
Europe continued to increase, and by the
18th century the Papillon had become a
firm favorite of the French court (as can be
seen in Jean Baptiste Greuze’s 1774 portrait of
Madame de Porcin, below). Marie Antoinette
kept them as boudoir dogs and it is said that,
in 1793, she carried her dog Thisbe with her
to the guillotine.
