STORY
ABOVE After catching
a vole, a female lands
on the large roots of
a fallen tree before
returning to the nest to
share the prey with her
ofspring. She is able
to leave the chicks for
short periods of time to
hunt once they are large
enough to stay warm.
RIGHT Ural owls
will take a variety of
mammals and birds
but voles make up 60
to 90 per cent of their
diet. Occasionally they
will hunt large insects,
reptiles and amphibians
such as this frog.
