Viperfish
I n the deeper parts of the ocean the water
is as dark as night. Here in the gloomy, cold
waters you will find some of the scariest-looking
fish, including the frightening viperfish. It is also
called the fangfish because of its huge teeth.
The viperfish is a fierce hunter. As well as
huge eyes to help it see, it has its own
flashlight—a light at the end of a long
spine on its back. The viperfish flashes
this on and off to attract food such as
shrimp and smaller fish. In the darkness
they swim closer until it’s too late—
gulp! The viperfish’s jaws can open
extra wide to swallow prey whole.
