Puffin
In winter, the colorful parts of a puffin’s beak
fall off, leaving it dull and gray.
W ith their colorful beak and bright-orange feet, puffins look
pretty fancy. On land they walk with a funny waddle, and
because of this and their bright colors they are sometimes called
“clowns of the sea.” When they’re annoyed with each other, grumpy
puffins stomp around with their beaks open.
All winter, Atlantic puffins have to face storms and mighty waves.
When spring comes at last, they return to cliffs to nest. Puffin parents
dig a hole or reuse a rabbit burrow where they raise their one chick,
called a puffling. This hungry fluffball will grow fatter than its parents.
They bring it lots of shiny fish, lined up neatly in their beaks.
