Y ou may think that large animals rule the
land, but really beetles do. There are huge
numbers of these tough insects and they live
almost everywhere, from seashores to
mountaintops. The only place without
beetles is the ocean.
Think of a type of food, and there’s
a beetle that eats it. With their
strong jaws, beetles feed on plants,
roots, wood, animals, and rotting
things. Some even eat each other.
Dung beetles reuse poop left by
bigger animals. They roll it into
little balls, which they bury for their
young, called grubs, to feast on.
Some dung beetles are thieves,
though! They steal poop balls from
each other instead of making their own.
