These beautiful butterflies
have an amazing secret
The ability to see colour and objects is
dependent on the amount of light reflected
from a given surface. However, the glasswing
butterfly has found a way around that. Their
wings have a completely random arrangement of
nanostructures, meaning light can pass straight
through the wing without being reflected. Almost
like a cloak of invisibility, the butterflies are able
to stay undetected by birds when in flight.
