                                  Steak diane’s origins are obscure, but it reached a peak of
                                  popularity in the 1950s and 1960s in the kind of upscale
                                  Manhattan restaurants featured in the film. It was a signature
                                  dish of the 21 Club (still going strong today) where JJ, dining with
              THE MEAL            a US senator, holds aloft his post-prandial cigarette and orders Falco
                                  to “match me, Sidney”. The 21 Club’s steak diane was taken off the
                                  menu in 2008, but they’ll still make it on request. Traditionally the
                                  brandy was flambéed tableside as part of the theatre, though that
                                  might not work for a TV dinner… The lemon and ginger fool is a sweet
                                  counterpoint to the film’s bitter tone, and it has a fitting sharpness.
