2 The Danube Valley
The beautiful blue Danube, extolled by writers and
composers, is an extraordinary river. It passes through
eight countries, and four capital cities have been built
on its banks. The Danube enters Austria as a mountain
river right after Passau at Achleiten and leaves 360 km
(240 miles) further along, beyond the Hainburg
marshes, heading for Bratislava. In Upper Austria,
many magnifi cent towns have been built along its
routes; historically, scores of fortresses, abbeys and
churches arose on its steep banks (Clam, Melk).
The majestic river is an important transport route, Burg Clam
and to visitors it offers an excellent network of bicycle The romantic silhouette of Clam

has remained virtually unchanged
since the 12th century.
