MN SAYS...
The time is right to look to the future
The FIA’s plans to promote new rallying talent are overdue and will be vital
Elfyn Evans answered Motorsport News’s call (MN, January 22) to show that he belongs among the World Rallying’s elite drivers with a
stunning performance on the Monte Carlo Rally last weekend. A podium fell just short of what he had looked set to achieve, but the porte
for his 2020 campaign look good.
The 31-year-old will be in the heart of the WRC title fight and brings fresh hope for British fans. But Elfyn is 31, and hardly in the first flushes of his top-fligh
career. Of the 10 full-time and part-time manufacturer drivers in rallying’s highest echelon, the average age of the competitors is north of 30 years old – and
even that statistic is skewed by teenage sensation and Toyota man Kalle Rovanpera. That is why the FIA’s drive to unearth younger talents and give them a
leg-up to the WRC’s top table is necessary and it is welcome. There is, and has been for some time, a glass ceiling when it comes to rising stars being able t
grab a chance. Hopefully, the FIA’s hammer will be able to shatter that, which will be a boost for new blood and a breath of fresh air for the championship itse
