                                                                                    It’s hard to imagine these days but, during the
                                                                                  Second World War, the inhabitants of Britain’s cities
                                                                                   would wake up to this kind of scene on an almost
                                                                                    daily basis. The morning after a German air raid
                                                                                     during the Battle of Britain, a number 88 bus
                                                                                      lies in a large crater in Balham High Street,
                                                                                        South London. The explosion was so
                                                                                         powerful, it destroyed part of the
                                                                                            Tube station underneath.
