HELL ON THE HIGH STREET
Taken 15 October 1940
It’s hard to imagine these days but, during the
Second World War, the inhabitants of Britain’s cities
would wake up to this kind of scene on an almost
daily basis. The morning after a German air raid
during the Battle of Britain, a number 88 bus
lies in a large crater in Balham High Street,
South London. The explosion was so
powerful, it destroyed part of the
Tube station underneath.
