2 All Shapes
and Sizes
Cows come in various shapes and sizes. Some of their
characteristics originated with the ancient aurochs.
Two different descendants of this prehistoric animal
eventually developed. One had a large hump on its
upper back, while the other was humpless. The cows
in the United States and other western countries have
no hump. In eastern countries, cows have humps on
their backs. The Brahman, an Asian breed, is a
humped cow. Brahmans are hardy and can tolerate
hot, humid weather. They can be found in a few areas
of the southern United States.
A cow’s most distinguishing features are large
eyes, friendly faces, big muzzle, and rounded ears
Cows really do come in all shapes and sizes, including this Brahman
cow, whose large hump on its back is its distinguishing feature.
