Shorthorn, and Jersey. 95 percent of all dairy cows
are Holsteins, the most popular milking breed. There
are about 9 million dairy cows in the United States.
The United States also has over 30 million beef
cattle. Well-known beef breeds are the Angus,
Hereford, and Shorthorn. The Angus is considered to
produce the highest-quality beef. Texas has more beef
cattle than any other state. It also has more farms—
about 229,000. Alabama, in comparison, has only
