abomasum—The fourth compartment of a cow’s
stomach, where the digestive process gets completed.
bacteria—Microscopic organisms, some of which
produce disease.
bolus—A soft mass of chewed food.
branded—Put an identification mark on an animal
by burning or freezing its flesh.
breed—A strain of related animals that humans
create by mating domesticated species.
cud—Food that ruminants regurgitate to be
chewed again.
domesticated—Made suitable for living near
or with humans.
emit—To discharge into the air.
fertilize—To spread material that enriches
land and helps plants grow.
graze—To feed on grass or pasture.
herd—A group of animals of one kind kept
together.
