we have a villain that wants to live
up to the legend of the villain in that
franchise. Ren is always grasping
for that legend, trying to live up to
it, worried at every moment that he
might not be able to be the man his
grandfather was—that he might fail
himself, his grandfather, and in a
very meta way, us, the audience. It’s
a bold thematic statement worn on
its sleeve and I admire it for that.”
