Deep in the Amazon rainforest, butterflies
and bees gather to sip the salty tears of a
caiman, a reptile related to the alligators.
Sources of salt, a mineral vital to the insects’
health, are scarce in the forest. The caiman’s
tears, which keep its eyes lubricated when
it is out of the water, are a welcome find.
