Using its beak and feet,
the crow removes any
leaves and bends the
end of the stick into
a hook shape.
New
Caledonian
crows are
one of a few
animals that
design tools.
1. Scientists think the New
Caledonian crow visualizes how
to solve a problem before it starts
making and using the tool. This
crow finds and adapts a stick that
can be used to hook insects from
inside trees. In test conditions,
these birds can even connect sticks
together to make a longer tool.
FAST FACTS
Smart bottlenose dolphins hold
a sea sponge in their mouths to
protect their rostrum (snout)
from sharp rocks when they
dive for food.
The crow moves the
Sponge stick up and down
and from side to side in
order to hook an insect.
Sea otters keep their
Clam favourite stone in a skin
pouch, ready to break
open the tough
shellfish and
clams they
feed on.
2. The crow holds the adapted stick in its beak
Stone and pushes the hooked end into the bark or hole
of a tree. An insect is caught on the hook.
