              This South American bird flashes

               of blue because only blue light is
 blue animals   reflected off its feathers. The pigment
                of the feathers is actually black.

                        This pretty South American
                 butterfly has microscopic scales on
              top of its wings that reflect blue light,
                    “flashing” in contrast with their
                 brown undersides when in flight to
                     make it appear and disappear.
























                                                                         Poison dart frog
                                                                         Discovered in South America in
                                                                         1968, the vivid blue poison dart frog
                                                                         has tiny crystals under its skin that
                                                                         catch the light and make it appear
                                                                         blue, acting as an alert to predators.
