“It was relatively simple when I discovered that the interference could be fractal diffraction. Any
future signals can be compensated for. It can also be applied to outgoing signals too” Hasbid
enthused. Klute looked over Hasbid’s notes. His eyes widened and he turned to Jason
“Get him to help you apply this to the message we’ve been sending through the rift. Captain I want
to set a rota for monitoring this station for replies to our hails, are there any free crew who have
some coms experience available?” He asked Hart
“There are two former coms techs in engineering who can be spared and two ensigns in Command
that are in a quiet period of their flight training who have coms experience you could have them
too” she replied. Just then a call came for Captain Hart over the ships intercom requesting her
presence on the Bridge. She left to go to the upper decks.
When Hart arrived on the Bridge, the main view screen showed an image of the rift and
what looked like some kind of vessel traversing its aperture.
“What do those fools think they’re doing, have you tried hailing them?” She barked her orders to the
young female Coms officer
“Yes Captain; but they aren’t responding. I tried using Hasbid’s algorithm too, and they just kept on
going. They are either ignoring us or they have no coms working” she replied
“Magnify the image and filter out the interference; let’s see who they are more clearly.” The Coms
and Techs did as ordered. The image clarified and they zoomed in on the side of the vessel. It
appeared to have suffered in a fire fight and was battle scarred. No identifying marks could be seen
on the derelict.
“Science and Engineering; get a traction lock on it and tow it into a docking orbit.
Run the silhouette through all the databases, get me an identification of the
type as soon as possible, Engineering Chief, get yourself up here to the Bridge”
Hart barked her additional orders. The vessel was about a quarter the size of the
Hellion and drifting dangerously close to the rift. Markings on the hull were in a
script no one recognised at first. Then someone spotted a decal on the upper
rear of the ship.
“That’s the symbol for the Hanover House of the Atalaman Congress” exclaimed
the Navigator; Fjord Hendrickson “It’s an early version used on craft from the Third Dynasty. What is
a relic like that doing this far out?” he continued.
“Get that ship docked and set up an away team number one” Hart said then turned to the young
navigator who had spoken out “How do you know so much about this period...Hendrickson?” Hart
asked less harshly
“It was a study subject as part of my Training at Thule Academy Ma’am. We were required to choose
from a list of additional study materials and The Atalaman Congress history became my choice as
I’ve always been fascinated by it. The script is probably from just before the unification of the
Hunderlight and Hanover houses by marriage to preserve the Hunderlight Dynasty from dying out. I
could cross reference my course notes and pass my findings to the away team if you want?” the
young man queried.
“No I have a better idea, gather the materials you need and join the away team in case they need
assistance in interpreting any ships records that might survive” Hart said and dismissed the
crewman. His understudy took over the helm
Message in a bottle
Julio Panhedran was the latest generation of the House of Hanover
to hold the office of Praetor; head of the Cabinet of rule, his Uncle was High
Chancellor and the last of his generation. His Forefathers were the
commanders of the First Crew. They were the ones who came to this
realm. When word came of a strange find on the world where his
predecessors had discovered Atlantis, he could scarcely believe what was
being told to him. His Uncle was less sceptical.
