filters.
Acquire knowledge about advanced water treatment methods like water softening, desalination, RO
plant, demineralization, adsorption, ion exchange, defluoridation and iron and manganese removal.
Acquire knowledge on the requirements of water distribution, design of service reservoirs, water
distribution networks, house service connection and pipe fittings & fixtures.

OBJECTIVES:
To get familiarized with the estimation of sanitary sewage flow, its design, storm water estimation
and corrosion and its preventive measures.
To understand the procedure behind the primary treatment process of sewage and its construction,
operation and maintenance.
To understand the procedure exists in the secondary treatment process of sewage using Activated
Sludge, Aerated systems, Stabilization ponds etc., and their construction, operation and maintenance
aspects.
To learn the process of sewage disposal using various methods without affecting the environment.
To acquire knowledge on the treatment of sludge using digesters, thickeners and their disposal.
UNIT I PLANNING AND DESIGN OF SEWERAGE SYSTEM 9+3
Characteristics and composition of sewage - population equivalent - Sanitary sewage flow estimation –
Sewer materials – Hydraulics of flow in sanitary sewers – Sewer design – Storm drainage - Storm runoff
estimation – sewer appurtenances – corrosion in sewers – prevention and control – sewage pumping -
drainage in buildings - plumbing systems for drainage.
UNIT II PRIMARY TREATMENT OF SEWAGE 9+3
Objectives – Unit Operations and Processes – Selection of treatment processes - Onsite sanitation - Septic
tank - Grey water harvesting – Primary treatment – Principles, functions and design of sewage treatment
units - screens - grit chamber - primary sedimentation tanks – Construction, Operation and Maintenance
aspects.
UNIT III SECONDARY TREATMENT OF SEWAGE 9+3
Objectives – Selection of Treatment Methods – Principles, functions and design of Activated Sludge Process
and Extended aeration systems - Trickling filters – Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) – Membrane Bioreactor
