The winter track team outscored its opponents in
dual meets by more than five hundred points; won the
New England Prep School Championship by forty-five
points, and rewrote the old school record book in lead
ing Moses Brown to a reign in the hierarchy of track
which may be for many years unmatchable.
The astounding depth of the team spelled success.
"Bubbly" Wilson, running at his usual record-breaking
pace, led the long distance men. Striding close behind
him in the mile was Glenn McCrea and in the two
mile Roger Bennett. If necessary, both Wilson and Mc
Crea could also run the 1000 and contend with team
mate Tom Burnett for superiority. The middle— dis
tance 600 was uncontested. Record-breaker Rick Bern-
stingle went undefeated, and Tom Ferguson was only
two seconds behind. Pete Lacaillade, Al McCully, and
Buddy Lisker were all capable of a 5.6 in the 50; these
three, plus John Hyland, Captain Pete Holmes, and
Bernstingle, formed a 300 nucleus which was almost
unscored upon. In the hurdles, Lacaillade was beaten
only by an Exeter foe; when Pete had to give up this
event because of injury, versatile John Hyland made
a habit of winning it; John Femino usually was next.
The oldest school track record— 6'3% " in the high
jump— was erased by Pete Holmes' leap of 6'4". Junior
Je ff Blunt jumped 6'0" consistenly this year. Shot
putters Ed Ricci, Buddy Beckel, and Greg Sanford
were a noticeable improvement over putters of recent
years.
