1700- The Charity School in the City of New York was founded in
the colonial period in the belfry of Trinity Church.
William Huddleston founded Trinity School in 1709 as the
Charity School in the City of New York under the direction of the
Venerable Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign
Parts. At one point he was given a salary raise to ten pounds.
Nevertheless, a major portion of his remuneration came in the form
of fire wood. In the early records of the School one often finds
references to a grant to the Head Master of “Three Cords of
Walnut Wood” in order, we assume, to supplement his income and
heat his home. One can also easily see that Trinity School in its
early days was truly a Charity School.
