Not many people know about the Or
chestra at Ralston, and even fewer know that
Chris Korten is one of its stars.
Korten, a senior who has played the trom
bone for eight years, is indeed a star. The
awards he has won are numerous including:
the John Phillip Sousa Award, which is
given to the most accomplished Ralston
Band Member, First Chair All-State, selec
tion to the National High School Honors Or
chestra in California, and selection as an al
ternate to the National High School Band in
Tennessee.
Although Korten plays in Jazz Band,
Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and is a member
of the Varsity Baseball Team, he also finds
time to play in the Omaha Youth Symphony,
Intergeneration Orchestra and the UNO
Symphony Orchestra.
And does he have any plans for continuing
with music in college?
“Yes, I plan to major in music education at
Kansas University.”
Korten also said that he would like to
transfer to the Eastman or Julliard School of
Music after his second or third year at Kan
sas.
As for a career in music, Korten said that
he would like to be a professor of trombone
at a major college and do some studio play
ing in New York or California.
During the 1985-86 school year the Omaha Sym
phony visited RHS. This provided the opportunity
for the RHS orchestral students to perform with
professional musicians.
Senior Chris Korten, jazz band trombonist, is shown
here practicing. Korten proved, through his musical
accomplishments, that practice makes perfect.
