The 1975-1976 M B Wrestling team, led
by co-captains Russell Settipane and Ernie
Votolato, fielded a team with over twenty
wrestlers. The improved facilities and cen
tral location of the new gym added to the
spirit and morale of the wrestlers as well
as giving them a sense of integration with
other sports at MB.
The season record of 2-6 reflected the
many injuries that left Russ Settipane,
Reed Yohn, and Jon Blitz out for most of
the season. However, at the Southeastern
New England prep tourney, the Quaker
finished 6th out of the nine team field.
Although he was out most of the sea
son because of a fractured wrist, co-captain
Russ Settipane recovered in time for the
SENE tournament where he captured the
177 lb. weight class. Co-captain Ernie
Votolato finished the season with an
undefeated record and placed third in the
highly competitive 127 lb. weight class.
Both Rusty and Mark Nisbet had fine
seasons with 6-2 and 5-2 records respec
tively. Rusty placed third in the SENE’s,
beating the two opponents to whom he
had lost during the regular season, while
Mark narrowly missed 3rd in his weight
class. John Camper finished the year with
a 3-4 record in a talent-laden class, and
Dan Carter closed out the year with a
respectable 3-3-2 record.
Second year w restlers Carl DeLuca,
Yanko Castillo, and Darryl Wood contrib
uted equally to the high spirit of the team
and will return as veterans next year. Dar
ryl’s highlight of the season was pinning
his opponent from P.C.D., thus enabling
the Quakers to gain a victory over the
arch-rival Knights.
Rookies Chris Allegra, Jeff Halladay,
and Jeff Gladstone did well as first-year
wrestlers, and are looking forward to a
good season next year.
