downs in the last couple of years than
many do in a lifetime. Matt came out of
St. Joe's as a standout baseball and
basketball player looking forward to his
high school years at Cov Cath. After
great freshman and sophomore years,
things took a turn for the worse the
summer before his junior year. Matt
began to lose weight at an astonishing
pace and to feel very weak. It was in
September of his junior year that he
was diagnosed with a very rare blood
disorder. This disease derailed any
hopes for a normal year. He was
cooped up in a hospital for two months
while doctors ran tests to figure out how
best to treat him. It was not until a bone
marrow transplant from his sister that
Matt really began to see improvement
in his health. He recovered at home
and missed even more school. It was
during this time that the Cov Cath
family had the biggest effect on Matt.
“The visits from friends and the tutoring
from teachers were the actions that
helped the most," said Matt. Due to his
work ethic and determination to
continue his athletic career Matt worked
hard and went on to have a successful!
senior year of basketball and baseball.
