rently in the White House tends to be more interesting.
“Interesting” would be downplaying the excitement, in
trigue, ferment, and successful tumult of the day.
Not only did the 2000 convention feature the main Repub
lican candidates, but it experienced some fascinating uproar.
Gary Bauer, roll-played by Russell Shattan, stormed the podium
despite his earlier drop-out from seeking his party’s nomination.
Later in the day, however, in an event destined for the political history books, the great state
of California - under the guidance of Mr. Crawford - staged a huge spontaneous show of
support for Elizabeth Dole, played by a dauntless Danielle Burgs. With the help of the
convention security staff, “Liddy” managed to take the dais for the candidate debates - man
aging to give convention winner John S. McCain (a.k.a. Andy Litinsky) a serious run for his
money and a second ballot. Yes, you could say that the convention was “interesting”... I
prefer insanely and intensely ELECTRIFYING.
When the people of the United States turn their attention to the political process and
choose their leaders in a system as close to the democratic ideal as humankind may ever
achieve, so too do the students at Pine Crest. For the 2000 race for the White House, we
hosted our political microcosm in the Stacy Gym - under the guidance of 54 state and territo
rial flags and Old Glory’s red, white, and blue. Without a doubt, the patriotic exuberance
was powerful, breathtaking, and mood setting. Let the record show, Pine Crest has taken the
first step in political efficacy and civic involvement - if only American society as a whole
would follow.
A special thanks to Mr. Sessman, Ms. Richardson and the entire Institute for Civic
Involvement who hosted and spent joyous hours
planning the convention, as well as the Convention
Planning Committee, the various candidate com
mittees, and the entire staff and faculty of Pine
Crest. You are the lifeblood of this institution.
Good luck, Mr. McCain - make us all proud.
