Several students returned before the scheduled opening of
the fall semester: some came to earn money for a school bill, others
to prepare the campus before the arrival of the student body, and
still others came to try out for a team.
Student workers provided service to the departments that
were short on staff. Corie Smith, who worked in food service, said,
"That beginning time was a LOT of work. There were only a handful
of us, and we were together pretty much 24/7 for a week and a half.
But I guess it was a good thing because we got to know each other
really well and learned the best way to work with each other."
Many vied for a chance to make a team, whether soccer, vol
leyball, or golf. Jen Ramos made the women's soccer team after
grueling preseason practices. "Practice was so hot, and the air was
so humid; we could barely breathe. We practiced three times a day
for the most part," she said. "It was good to go back to the room
after practice and just sleep without any noise or distractions. It ^ o r ie Smith and Sara
