More than a never-ending saga of pulled
hair, glitter, flowing ribbons, and twisted
facial contortions know n sim ply in the
ch eerlead in g w orld as ‘fa c ia ls’, the
cheerleading team is an integral part of Pine
Crest Athletics. From organizing pep assem
blies with exciting gam es that force the
grade levels to face off in intense competi
tion to cheering for both the football and
b ask etb all team s, the Pine C rest
Cheerleading team also attends com peti
tions of our own. Many hold a highly mis
construed impression of what it takes to be
a cheerleader. W hile a loud voice and some
times overly-energetic disposition are help
ful, to be a m em ber of the Com petition
C heerleading team takes dedication and
hard work. Cheerleading practice does not
consist of mere idle gossip and a little bit of
yelling thrown in for good measure; prac
tice involves conditioning, intricate dance
and motion sequences that test the coordi
nation, and propelling human bodies over
ten feet into the air with the clear realiza
tion that this body, which hurtles back down
to the earth with shocking speeds, m ust
safely be caught.
All of this work is done in order to pre
pare for the ultimate display of cheerleading
prowess, the cheerleading competition. The
competition routine is three minutes of pure
exhaustion with infinite areas for mistakes
and deductions from the hawk-eyed judg
ments of cheerleading officials. From the
moment our team name is announced and
we walk out onto the competition floor in
the darkened arena, nervous emotion races
through our bodies. Suddenly, the lights
brighten and the music starts. In those three
minutes, it is our chance to make the most
of months of challenging practices and frus
tration. Hitting the perfect routine is an in
describable feeling, only known to a Pine
Crest Cheerleader. "Lie for a friend, Cheat
death, Steal to w in!!" PC CHEER '05
