“Can I have your attention,” announced Shama
in our eighth period class. “As most of you know, Adonica
is in the Miami Children’s Hospital. She woke up the
other morning and wasn’t able to move. The doctors ran
some tests on her, and it turns out that she has a tumor.”
My heart dropped; this had been the first time I had heard
the news. I had seen Adonica’s smile just days before as
we rehearsed for the ballet. Pirouetting across the stage
without a care sharing the traditional Saturday morning
bagel with a middle school dancer, she seemed perfect.
