By means of fall tournaments for older and younger boys inter
est in tennis is kept vigorously alive throughout the major part of
the school year. Competitive interest is aroused through the award
of the Fall Tournament Novice Cup for Tennis, the gift of Albert Horton, 3rd, ’29,
on which are inscribed the names of the winners of the Senior and Junior Tourna
ments, and through the award at the end of the spring season of the Chase Cup for
the Best Individual Tennis Player. Last fall Robert Fox won the Senior and Philip
Jastram the Junior Tournament.
Although weather conditions were unfavorable for practice at the beginning of
the spring season, a good number of players reported to Coaches Herman and
Adkins. Of these Cooper, Jastram, and Fraser had had team experience last year.
To their number were added as prospective teammates Seiler, Steere, Haskell, Med-
bery, Singleton, and R. Fox.
The first match with LaSalle saw LaSalle gain a lead of 3-0, when play was
called because of rain.
The next engagement was played with Tabor Academy. Jastram won 6-3, 7-5;
Fox, 6-3, 6-4; Fraser, 6-3, 6-3; Steere, 6-2, 7-5; and Haskell, 6-1, 6-4. The final score
was in our favor, 7-2.
At present the team appears to be well balanced and has excellent prospects of
a very good season.
