IT’S AMERICA, SO W HY ARE
ALL THE SPIRIT SQUADS
DOING RUSSIANS?
Cheering and Dancing in
America was a form of entertain
ment at sporting events. The per
formances often included difficult
techniques and high skilled jumps.
Junior Shannon Fleming of the Var
sity Squad received the Best Rus
sians award this year.
“Wake up you sleepy heads
hall your hinies out of bed; moti
vate yourself.” These were words
the squads lived by in the summer.
Cheerleaders and pom squad mem
bers often saw the sunrise. Every
6:00 a.m. practice was preparation
for summer camp at Lake Okoboji
held at the end of June for 3 1/2
days. For their performances at
camp, Pom Squad received Top
Squad Award, Best Home Routine
and a spirit stick. Three Ralston
Pom Squad members (Kassie Wells,
Lisa Cervantes and Amy Marsh)
received nominations for the su
perstar award.
Cheerleaders also received
many honors. The Varsity squad
received the Top Team award ,
Superior ribbons for their home
routines, and they took home a
spirit stick. The JV cheerleaders
also received superior ribbons and
a spirit stick.
The hardest thing about being
a member of Pom Squad or
Cheerleading, according to Junior
Amy Lawson is, “it’s really hard to
get everyone spirited, especially
when your team is losing, but when
they are spirited, it’s a lot of fun,"
and the best part of being a member
Lawson said was, “You have so

with the Pom Squad at halftime. but love it!"
