t's 1965, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by the Beaties is
Number One on the pop charts. Girls wear crew necks
and pleated wool skirts. Mellanee Devall is fresh out of
high school and wants to pursue a career as a trial attor­
I ney, but finds the classes boring. Instead, she attends
UNO where she majors in English and receives a certificate
to also teach history.
In 1969, she marries, becomes Mellanee Kvaskicka and
begins in the student teacher program where she teaches
history.
In 1982, Mrs. Kvasnicka became the head of the English
Department at South, which involves writing teacher ev­
aluations, planning curriculum and ordering books. She
continues to teach creative writing and English.
