The Student Organizations of Rllentown College offer a diversity of
services. These range from music and entertainment, to press and
publications, to academics and public services. Much time and effort is put
into the planning of special events here at Rllentown College in an effort to
unite the student body as well as further develop the social atmosphere.
fill student organizations, excluding the newspaper, The DeSales
Minstrel, and the yearbook, L'Histoire, are funded by the Student
Bovernment Rssociation. Any function or event sponsored by an
organization must be approved by SEfl. In most instances, an organization
is required to hold a fund raiser to supplement the cost of any excursion it
will sponsor. These fund raisers often take the form of sundae nights,
candy and hake sales, and contests, such as the Up-Sync Contest and The
Roommate Bame.
Many of the organizations are responsible for annual favorites such as
Mr. & Ms. RC, the Freshman-Sophomore Semi-Formal and the
Junior-Senior Formal. Other events include hiking and ski trips, pinochle
tournaments, and dances and movies in the Commons.
numerous events are service-oriented. It is these events which receive
the most cooperation from the RC community. The 1988-89 program of the
year was “ R Merry Christmas II.” This came as no surprise to the 150 +
volunteers who devoted one afternoon in December to a large group of
mentally retarded citizens of Lehigh, northampton and various other
counties.
The organization of the year for 1988-89 was Amnesty International. In
its short existence at RC, Amnesty International has contributed much
support to the worldwide fight for the release of prisoners of conscience.
This organization held numerous write-a-thons, petition-signing days, and
a luminaria along the paths of the campus in support of this cause.
Trips to Mew York, Baltimore Inner Harbor, and the Stroh’s Brewery
were also huge successes. Members of the faculty and administration as
well as students took advantage of these excursions.
