Welcome to the world of an AC­
CESS (Allentown College Continuing
Education & Summer Sessions)
student.
The ACCESS student has a dif­
ferent role than that of the traditional
college student. This type of student
has circumstances surrounding
his/her life that demand involvement
in many non-student activities such
as a full time career, household
responsibilities, etc.
Usually ACCESS students are
beyond the expected college age
and, therefore, have a greater in­
dependence and more respon­
sibilities outside of the world of
academia. Dr. George Bilicic, Dean of
Continuing Education, said that
almost all of the students are holding
full-time jobs. “ ACCESS students
typically are homemakers, workers,
or retirees, and do not live in the
residence halls,” Dr. Bilicic said.
Their utilization of college facilities
most include the ACCESS office,
I have found that returning to
college in the evenings while main­
taining a full-time position in
business has enabled me to relate so
much more of what I am learning to
what I am doing on the job, as op­ reasonable, and I could earn a four-

people themselves and relate what
they are teaching in class to the “ real
world.”

students do not have the time to
make use of the variety of campus
facilities, their tuition is lower than
that of a full time day student.
ACCESS students are not per­
mitted to take courses at other
colleges for transfer purposes.
However, courses from other
colleges can be transferred into AC­
CESS providing the courses meet
Allentown College criteria.
ACCESS offers free counseling,
advising, and career placement ser­
vices. There are 17 day degree
programs offered and 7, evening cer­ which is for family after a long day at

The Programs of Integration and
Distribution are limited. ACCESS
students do not have to take as many
of these as day students but are
required to take as many con­
centration courses as day students.
Dr. Bilicic said there are good
points as well as bad points to the

ter I checked out the ACCESS
program, I found the costs

Dr. Bilicic has also observed that AC­
CESS students are highly motivated
and do not come here to fool around
because it is expensive and the
money is coming out of their own
pocket. “The greatest advantage of
being an ACCESS student is being
able to apply at work what you lear­
ned at school the night before,” Dr.
Bilicic said.
“The greatest disadvantage of
being an ACCESS student is that you
are required to attend classes at the
most important time of the day,
work.
According to Dr. Bilicic, “ ACCESS
is growing and becoming a larger and
more important part of the college.
The program adds another dimension
to the institution and adds new
faculty to the Allentown College
staff.
ACCESS to me has been a
blessing. Allentown College has the
courses that I need and is located
halfway between my home and work.
More than anything else, the people
that I have met during my studies
have made night classes a pleasant
experience. I also am pleased with
the career development enhance­
ment.
The one problem with ACCESS is
the time the classes are held. I miss
many school activities that my
children are involved in when I have
class from 8:30 p.m. — 11 p.m.
