got tired of just reading about
history, and this allows me to
change it," said Mitch Allen.
The "realistic simulation of a
historical battle" is how Allen
defined his hobby of war
gaming. During his sophomore
year Allen got involved in war
games in an attempt to relieve
boredom. The games were
played with tin soldiers which
Allen made himself in his
basement. It took Allen about
two hours to paint a battalion of
12 soldiers, and he usually spent
about 40 dollars a month on his
hobby. After he molded the
soldiers, he painted them
according to the actual uniforms
of the time period and country.
After completing the soldiers,
Allen would go to friend's house
where they laid out the battles
on a large table. Victories and
defeats were determined by a
roll of the dice, and battles
sometimes lasted up to 20
hours.
