Breah a leg
T he drill made a loud and
■ grinding sound, as the teeth
of the blade gnawed and bit deep
into the plaster. The doctor pried
the cast open, and, for the first
time in four months, the boy could
see what his leg looked like.
The lightness and stiffness was so
different from before that the
boy's leg quivered from shock. His
feelings and sensations started to
come back to life, and, once again,
the pain set in.
Restrictions from activities and
discomfort from pain were two
major complaints from a victim of
a broken bone. When a cast was
put on, many inconveniences came
with it.
Students dealt with not taking
showers, fearing that a plastic bag
would leak. Some were forced to
tear the seams in their clothes,
while others kept a hanger close
by in order to relieve the itch
from the cast.
Some looked forward to leaving
class five minutes early, trying to
escape the stampedes in the halls.
Others dreaded the typical
question, “ How did that happen?"
that was asked over and over
again. And there were always those
who loved the extra attention and
recognition that they received.
An accident in p.e. class resulted in an arm
cast for senior Mark Massaro. Unable to tie his
own shoes, he gets assistance from senior
Donna Stopak.
