This year Mr. Amzi Barber, Social Studies
chairman, put together another fantastic
Washington trip when 56 people enjoyed the
opportunity of seeing our nation’s capital at
first hand. Every branch of our government
was represented as the group visited the
Supreme Court, both Houses of Congress,
and the White House, where a glimpse of the
Oval O ffice was permitted. Students met
with such well-known national figures as
Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller, Senators
Jam es A llen, D ick Stone, Lawton Chiles,
Henry Jackson, Mark Hatfield, Representa
tives J. Herbert Burke, Paul Rodgers, and
Joh n Rhoades, all of whom provided a
detailed picture of how our government func
tions. Informative trips were made to the
Pentagon, the FBI, Arlington Cemetery,
Mount Vernon, the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, the Lincoln Memorial, the
Jefferson Memorial, and the W ashington
Monument. Leisure time included snow-ball
fights, the Smithsonian, poker games, shop
ping in Georgetown, and a beautiful evening
spent at Hogates. All-in-all, it was a memora
ble educational experience.
Representative Jim Wright and Senator Jim Allen award centerpieces to Pine Crest girls.
