Out on
my own
nflation: prices were still going up,
I so we all had to learn how to save
our money and time. Taking a home
ec. class helped both boys and girls
who would be out on their own in the
future.
The foods classes were offered for
students to learn to make meals that
were cheaper and better than those in
restaurants. These classes had become
quite popular for boys as well as girls.
Students learned to prepare anything
from breakfasts to exotic dinners.
Precise measurements were one of the
specified items learned.
Sewing classes had also become a
big attraction for boys as well as girls.
Boys learned more than just sewing a
button on a shirt. They made T-shirts,
suits, shorts, and duffle bags. The girls’
outfits varied from formals, pants and
dress suits to swim suits and shorts.
Some people thought that home ec.
classes were a waste of time, but it
was good to learn in-depth about
something that would be used in the
future.
G etting things ready, seniors Scott Toebben and Teri
Christensen put in last minute ingredients to make their meal a
success because they have invited friends to come and try out
their cooking.
Following the pattern instructions carefully, freshman
Barbara Vana works at her own pace to try to finish an outfit.
