DECAlog
ttending a Kansas City Chiefs
A football game in Kansas City,
Missouri, was one of the many activi
ties in which DECA (Distributive Edu
cation Clubs of America) participated.
The trip was taken during DECA week
in November. Several other schools
involved in DECA also went.
Deca members also sponsored a
Halloween dance with a judging of the
best costume.
The club attended two district con
ferences at Elkhorn and Bellevue
West, a State Leadership Conference
at Aurora, and a State Career Devel
opment Conference at the Omaha
Red Lion Inn.
At the conferences, the members
were given written tests on general
merchandising, food marketing, food
service, finance and credit, apparel
and accessories, petroleum marketing,
and also competed in oral judged
events. Each member picked one area
in which to compete.
Several awards were won through
out the year by DECA.
Senior Janell Johnston won first
place in the area of general merchan
dise, while senior Tammy Sindelar
took second place in apparel and ac
cessories. Both girls were eligible to
compete for national honors in June in
Anaheim, California.
The only requirement for being a
DECA member was that one had to be
enrolled in Introduction to Distributive
Education (Introduction to Marketing)
or Distributive Education.
“DECA is a unique club. Thirty stu
dents were enrolled in the two classes
and thirteen joined the club,” said
Gary Waldron, a second-year DECA
sponsor.
