A ir bags, toxic waste, baby food,
* * a n d over-the-counter drugs: did all
these really involve the debate team?
According to Coach Leslie McGrew,
they did: “The debate team seemed
interested and was doing a lot of
specific research on the national topic,”
said McGrew.
The national topic this year was
“Resolved: should the federal
government initiate and enforce safety
guarantees on consumer goods?”
At a total of twenty-one
tournaments, each two-person team
had its own topic; that topic had to fall
into the same general category as the
national topic.
The team was young (six juniors, one
sophomore, and nine freshmen) and
discovered various debating styles
immediately.
“This was a year for rebuilding. We
were inexperienced and have learned a
great deal this season. But sucesses
came a little more frequently as we
neared the end of the season, and we
learned from our mistakes,” stated
McGrew.
R efresh er. Junior Jeff Hoham shows the novice debaters the
type of style to strive for during a humorous break in debate
class.
Paying up. Coach Leslie McGrew delivers the final fees to enter
