“King Phra Maha Jesada Raj Chao Memorial Day”

King Nangklao or Rama III was the third monarch of Siam in

Chakri Dynasty, ruling from 21 July 1824 to 2 April 1851. He
succeeded his father, King Rama II, as the King of Siam.

King Nangklao or Rama III was born on 31 March 1788. He later
served his father as Komma Tha (Minister of Trade and Foreign
Affairs.) As Komma Tha, he developed proficiency in foreign

trade and affection for Chinese goods and culture.

During his reign, the trade between Siam and China became
prosperous. With his trading skill, he managed to set a large sum

of money aside as the country's emergency fund. The money
was kept in red purses; subsequently, it was known as “Red Purse
Money.”

The cabinet then stipulated that 31 March of each year is the
"King Phra Maha Jesada Raj Chao Memorial Day to

commemorate His Majesty’s benevolence.
