THE ROLE OF MEDIA
Media is a source of transmitting information from a single source to multiple receivers. It comprises of various
tools of mass communication like television, radio, cinema, newspapers, magazines and Internet-based websites.
Indian media is active since the late 18th century. The print media started in India in 1780s. Radio broadcasting
began in 1927. India has nearly 1,600 satellite channels and is the biggest newspaper market in the world.
During the National Movements , media played a major role in awakening the citizens against the British rule. The
major credit for the success of these movements goes to media. Post-independence, press had a vital role in the
making of the Republic of India.
The Press Council of India functions for the press to regulate itself. It ensures that the Indian press is independent
and responsible. If the press has to function effectively for public interest, it should have freedom of expression and
should not be controlled by any authority. It is the Press Council that ensures whether the press follows the accepted
standards of journalistic ethics or not.
Today there are more than 900 news channels in India giving a tough competition to each other. This competition
has led to degradation of news authenticity. Instead of real news, Indian media is busy making up of stories for TRP.
It has become puppets in the hands of the powerful parties. In the name of creative presentation, its levels have gone
down to some irresponsible behaviour on screen.
Despite all these flaws, Media is regarded as the mirror of modern society because it reflects the true image of a
society helping it to improve and prosper.
