Ichi is one of the simplest kanji to write: a single line. Although it looks
one kanji can still be found on the 10,000 yen bill with the portrait of Fuku-
easy, the old version wasn’t so simple and looked like this 壱. The old
zawa Yukichi, a famous nineteenth-century philosopher/educator. This
ICHI/hito kanji is used in words such as ichi nichi (one day),
jūichi(eleven), and hitori (one person, alone).
Radical: 一 Number of strokes: one
Just like the number one, the kanji for “two” is extremely easy to write.
Also like the number one, it’s much easier to write than its “old” ver-
two 2,000 yen bill. You will find this kanji in compounds like nigatsu
sion, which looked like this 弐. You can still find the old style on the
NI/futa (February), jūni (twelve), and futari (two people).
