friend

“Friend” is such an important word in many people’s lives. tomodachi may be one
YŪ/tomo of the first words you encounter when learning Japanese. You can also say yūjin by
adding 人 (person), which sounds a little more formal and adult-like. When you write this
kanji, remember to start from the horizontal line.

Radical: 又 Number of strokes: four

                                   high, expensive

This kanji has a double meaning in Japanese when pronounced takai. takai means
“high” or “expensive,” depending on the context. Let’s imagine that a two-story building
KŌ/taka(i) or a tower forms this kanji. Combined with another kanji, it is pronounced kō, as in

                                   kōzan (high-altitude mountain).

Radical: 高 Number of strokes: ten
