交番 Kōban
A kōban is a neighborhood police station, usually found in
a small building or in a portion of a large building, where a
small contingent of police officers take turns responding
to emergencies, giving directions to passersby, and
patrolling the neighborhood by bicycle. In large cities, you
find kōban every few blocks or so. The existence of kōban
has greatly contributed to public safety in Japan.
