想,福尔摩斯一定会立刻奔进房子里,马上着手研究这个神秘的案

                件。可是,他似乎一点儿也不着急。他一副漠不关心的样子,在这种
                情况下,这种做法在我看来不免有些做作,他在人行道上走来走去,

                面无表情地凝视着地面、天空、对面的房子和那排围栏。观察完之
                后,他慢慢沿着小径走,或者应该说是沿着小径旁的草地边缘走,还

                一边全神贯注地看着地面。他停下来两次,有一次,我看到他露出微
                笑,还听到他发出一声满意的感叹。湿润的黏土地面上有很多脚印,

                但是,由于警察在上面走来走去,我看不出来,我的同伴怎样能从这
                上面看出任何端倪。然而,我有特殊的证据证明他对事物拥有敏锐的

                观察能力,所以我毫不怀疑,他看到了一些我看不出来的东西。

                      At the door of the house we were met by a tall, white-

                faced, flaxen-haired man, with a notebook in his hand, who
                rushed forward and wrung my companion's hand with
                effusion. "It is indeed kind of you to come," he said, "I have
                had everything left untouched."

                      "Except that!" my friend answered, pointing at the
                pathway. "If a herd of buffaloes had passed along there
                could not be a greater mess. No doubt, however, you had

                drawn your own conclusions, Gregson, before you permitted
                this."

                      "I have had so much to do inside the house," the
                detective said evasively. "My colleague, Mr. Lestrade, is
                here. I had relied upon him to look after this."
